audio won't play

Added two tiny mp3 tracks to a short presentation. All works well on my desktop but the audio only plays in Firefox, not in Opera, Chrome or Safari. Dare not try it on a PC. I tried converting the sound files to Ogg, but can't even add them to the timeline.
